Title I Assistants: Janet Wood and Judy Robinson, Licensed Educators and Mackenzie Payne
What is Title 1?
The purpose of Title 1 is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. Title 1 funding first began under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 as part of the Great Society Program. Title 1 is now the largest federally funded program. The funds provide schools with additional staff, additional materials for our kids, staff training, supplemental materials for teachers and family engagement opportunities.
How do Hominy Valley students benefit?
Hominy Valley is a school-wide Title 1 program where all students and staff benefit from the federal funds. A portion of our federal funds are used to fund a literacy specialist, Title I assistants, Title I tutor and a full time coach/interventionist. The specialist, the assistants and the tutor conduct small group literacy lessons in grades K-4 in the Jet Room during grade-level Jet time (jet time is our small group literacy time in each grade level). Funds are also used to purchase items such as student notebooks in Fundations, manipulatives to use during math instruction, texts to use during small group literacy time, and supplemental texts in Wit & Wisdom. Family engagment activities and professional development for staff are funded with Title I funds.
