Let's keep the "happy" in "happy holidays," and save flu for the Grinch! There have already been several flu-related deaths in NC this season. With flu activity expected to pick up through the holidays and beyond, remember these tips to remain flu-free.

According to Health Director;Gibbie Harris, Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BC HHS), a few cases of flu are beginning to occur in our area and there have been 3 deaths from flu illness in North Carolina. Instead of risking the flu this holiday season, be a hero and protect yourself and those you care about by following these simple steps prevent spreading and getting the flu:

Cover your cough
Wash your hands
Stay home if you are sick
Get a flu shot

The Center for Disease Control recommends that all individuals over 6 months of age get the flu vaccine every year. Flu vaccine is effective for a whole year and is usually available from your health care provider, drug stores and grocery stores. Also, Buncombe County Health and Human Services, located at 400 ;Coxe Ave in downtown Asheville, offers flu mist and flu shots. No appointment is needed, parking is available and they are open M - F, 8:00am to 5:00pm

Cost of flu vaccine at BC HHS Flu mist, costs $33, is recommended for healthy individuals, ages 2 & up. Regular flu shot, costs $26, is available for anyone over 6 months old; and High dose flu shot, costs $42, for adults 65 years and older . HHS accepts Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance and self-pay (cash, check/debit, or credit card). Those with no insurance may qualify for no cost vaccine based on eligibility.
