WHAT IS A GOOD STEM LESSON?

There are six characteristics to developing a good STEM lesson. In many ways they are like genuine science experiences that are hands-on and inquiry-based, but an idea STEM lesson is different in several ways.

  1. STEM lessons focus on real-world issues and problems. In the BCS STEM labs, the challenges are provided in the Canvas Course, but making the link between the challenge and real-world problem is the work done in grade level PLCs. This is where you can connect the challenge back to a topic that students can relate to, as long it is realistic (though it can be made up).

  2. STEM lessons are guided by the engineering design process (EDP).

  3. STEM lessons immerse students in hands-on and open-ended exploration.

  4. STEM lessons involve students in productive teamwork.

  5. STEM lesson apply rigorous math and science content.

  6. STEM lessons allow for multiple right answers and reframe failure as a necessary part of learning.
