Ways To Volunteer
All are welcome! You do not need prior experience to volunteer at Johnston. We offer a short orientation session a couple times each year to go over some tips and school policies. As a classroom volunteer, you will assist the teacher, as directed by him/her, with classroom routines, which may include basic math, reading and other tasks. Our mentors can eat lunch with students as well as provide support for students during recess or academics. The goal of the mentoring program is to provide students with a consistent, positive and encouraging role model. The days and times for volunteering can be flexible. Each volunteer will be required to complete the Volunteer Tracker application on the Volunteer Website through Buncombe County School to be approved. This system ensures that volunteers pass a background check. The process is done entirely online.
Current Johnston Volunteers have shared that they get just as much or more out of volunteering as the students get from the volunteers.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Johnston Elementary, please reach out to principal Angie Trantham or assistant principal Shannon Davis at (828) 232-4291.
Johnston Elementary looks forward to collaborating with you as a partner in education.
