Third graders at Johnston Elementary stepped into the shoes of fictional characters, bringing stories to life through their Wax Museum project. Each student created a unique character who journeyed to the United States from another country, complete with a backstory and reason for moving.
From a baker from Italy seeking better opportunities to a young girl from India pursuing education, the characters reflected a rich tapestry of cultures. Students shared their characters’ challenges and hopes, connecting classroom learning to history and empathy.
“The students were excited to share and they loved people asking questions about their work,” said third grade teacher Anna Fields. “They used the cover illustration from the text ‘Coming to America’ to determine their character's perspective. We have also been studying different causes for immigration, so students drew from this inspiration, as well.”
Families and other classes toured the living wax museum, learning about the courage, resilience, and dreams of these made-up, but deeply meaningful characters.
