Copyright Guidelines

General Guidelines:

You may use portions of legally acquired copyrighted works in your academic multimedia projects under the guidelines listed below.  

You must provide proper citations for all works used.

Fair Use Guidelines for Multimedia

Illustrations:

You may use a photograph or illustration in its entirety.

You may not use more that five images of an artist's or photographer's work.

If using works from a collection, you may use no more than 10 to 15 images, whichever is less.

Motion Media

You may use up to 10% or 3 minutes of a video or DVD, whichever is less.

You cannot alter the clip in any manner.

Music:    

You may use up to 10% or up to 30 seconds of a copyrighted musical composition.

You may use up to 10% or up to 30 seconds of a sound recording.      

Text:

You may use up to 10% of a copyrighted work or 1000 words, whichever is less.

Poems:

Entire Poem if less than 250 words
250 words or less if longer poem
No more than 5 poems (or excerpts) of different poets, from an anthology
Only 3 poems (or excerpts) per poet

Remember:

Almost everything created after March 1, 1989, is copyrighted whether it has a notice or not.
