News & Notes

August 2017

Dear Parents:

Welcome to a new school year!  I look forward to working with your child and getting to know your family.  I believe very strongly in good communication between home and school.  Please send a note or email any time you have a question or concern.

Items of interest:

-Shirley Miller and Autumn Merrill will be the instructional assistants for second grade this year.  The four second grade classes share these assistants.

-The official school day is 7:30 to 2:10. Students must be in their classroom by 7:30.

Buses should arrive between 7:00 – 7:20 a.m. All students who arrive between 7:00 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. will report to the cafeteria. Those who arrive after 7:15 a.m. will go immediately to their homeroom or to the cafeteria for breakfast. Any student who arrives after 7:30 a.m. is tardy and should report to the office for a tardy slip. Announcements will be made at 7:30 a.m. Class will begin at that time.

-Agenda Books: Be sure to purchase an agenda book from the office for your child.  Agendas are $5.00.  In the back of the agenda book you will find a clear pocket.  All notes and homework will be placed in that pocket.  Be sure to put anything you want me to see in this clear pocket, as well as completed homework.

-Homework: Your child’s agenda book will serve as their homework log.  Look for a separate homework letter after Labor Day.

-Weekly Work Folders: These will be sent home on Mondays and will contain your child’s work from the previous week.  Please look through the work with your child.  Please sign and date the log sheet to indicate that you have received and reviewed their work.  Return the empty folder on Tuesday mornings.

-Car riders: Be sure you pick up car rider cards if you plan to pick up your child in the afternoons.  For your child’s protection, we will only put children in cars with the appropriate car rider card displayed.

-Medication: No medicines of any kind can be given by school staff unless we have the medication form filled out completely and signed by the child’s doctor.  This includes all over the counter medicines and anything that says “medicated” on the label.  Medicines must be in their original container with the prescription attached.  Please do not send any medicines to school by the child.  All medications must be checked in through the office.

-Water bottles: I do allow students to have a water bottle on their desk.  Bottles should have a sports top so that water doesn’t pour out when the bottle gets tipped over.  Be sure your child’s name is on the bottle and please only fill with water.  This is a privilege for your child.  If they cannot manage having a water bottle on their desk they will lose the privilege.

-Cafeteria: Our lunch is 11:10- 11:35. Children are responsible for their own money!  Extras must be purchased with cash. No extras will be deducted from a student’s lunch account. Please be sure to keep your child’s lunch account in good standing. If your child eats breakfast at school, please allow ample time for them to eat and leave the cafeteria by 7:25. Breakfast is free for all students again this year.

–Subscription fee reminder… our class will be using Scholastic News Magazine and Science SpinScholastic News is a weekly educational magazine and Science Spin is a monthly issue, both are written for second graders. We will use these throughout the year.  Please send $8.00 for your child’s subscription.  If you would like to sponsor another child, please let me know!

-Volunteers: I will be contacting those of you that expressed interest in volunteering in our classroom this year.  It will be mid-September when I begin scheduling volunteers.  Please do not “drop in” to volunteer!  I need to know when you are coming and so I can have plans for your time.  Thank you in advance for your support!

I’m sure there will be many more things you have questions about as the year progresses.  I will try to explain routines and expectations as we move through the year.  Please contact me anytime you have a question or concern.
