Family Engagement Policy

Hominy Valley Elementary

Title 1: Family Engagement Policy

Hominy Valley is currently a Title 1 funded school.  This means that 40% of our student population qualifies to receive additional federal funding under the No Child Left Behind law. The goal of Title 1 is to provide a high quality education for every child through research based instruction, with the primary focus on students who are at risk of not meeting state academic standards. Title 1 provides research-based resources and materials, professional development for staff, and family engagement to promote literacy at home. Reading specialists plan lessons and prepare instructional materials to strengthen phonics, word work skills, vocabulary, fluency, reading comprehension, writing, and book discussions.

The faculty and Title 1 staff at Hominy Valley Elementary believe that parental involvement is the driving force behind student motivation for learning. An annual Title 1 meeting is held at the beginning of each year to introduce parents to the history, purpose, and curriculum of the program, as well as other activities offered throughout the year. Parents are also asked to serve on an Advisory Council for the Title 1 program. The Advisory Council will meet periodically and address any issues that need to be reviewed. Title I workshops are provided throughout the year to help further parents’ understanding of their children’s needs and strategies they can use to help strengthen literacy at home. In addition, a parent resource library is available in the Title 1 room. Our Title I library contains reference books on learning needs and behaviors, as well as hands-on materials to be used at home to supplement the curriculum. Parent requests and suggestions for additional materials are encouraged and welcomed at any time.

The Title 1 staff encourages effective communication between the school, staff, parent, and the child. Newsletters and reports are sent home throughout the year for the sole purpose of keeping parents and our community up to date. Hominy Valley Elementary welcomes parents to volunteer in all school activities. To support a collegian atmosphere of working together, Title 1 Family Compacts are sent home with each student. These compacts outline the shared responsibility of learning between the principal, the classroom teacher, Title 1, the student, and the parent. We believe that together, everyone achieves more. Lastly, please know that a translator can be present, if needed, at any meeting or conference.
